Emphasis upon energy reduction for waste water treatment remains predominantly with technology to decrease the power output of drives and control systems with no real attention to the process.
The philosophy of the water industry and partnering structures they employ generally remains fixed towards intensifying wastewater treatment with a disregard to the high energy input and sludge being produced, all contributing to very high carbon emissions. Practically all processes fall into this category, with the more intensified systems such as membrane technology having the highest energy and carbon footprint.
This Carbon Comparator demonstrates the substantive reductions that can be gained when processes such as Advanced-Aeration are considered as an alternative.
This is a BETA copy of the calculator and further processes and other treatment systems will be included in later editions. The object of the calculator is to provide water companies, plant designers and environmental groups with the facility to compare the different processes and place greater importance upon energy usage and carbon emissions between the available processes
