Veterinary Laboratories Agency DEFRA

VLA Winchester is a Defra operated veterinary post mortem and disease testing centre. After the introduction of the post mortem complex to the site it became apparent that the existing treatment facilities would need updating to adequately treat the waste produced, and ensure that the risks of biological contamination from hazardous waste coming into contact with the local water course were managed properly. Issues with the surging of drains and consequential yard flooding were also elements that needed to be considered when designing a bespoke Bio-Bubble plant to deal with the problems.

The VLA needs to deal with significant quantities of effluent during its daily business, so the treatment facilities needed replacing to make sure they were not overloaded and were able to deliver a final effluent of some quality. The Bio-Bubble design allows for the treatment of chemicals used within the establishment, by holding them in an aerated Balance Tank and utilising air stripping to drive off chemicals such as formaldehyde prior to its introduction into the treatment Reactor, further internal recycling ensures sufficient dilution for full biological treatment of the waste to take place. The requirement was to treat up to 9 m3 / day with an organic concentration of 428 mg/l. Commissioned earlier this year, the Bio-Bubble can be monitored and run remotely, trending flows and loads so that proper optimisation and monitoring of the plant can be undertaken. Interserve Building Ltd worked closely with the Bio-Bubble Team to deliver this project on time and on budget.
